FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 2, 2007
Contact your U.S. senators as soon as possible to let them know you support reform of the Federal Prison Industries (FPI)
The International Sign Association urges you to contact your U.S. senators as soon as possible to let them know you support reform of the Federal Prison Industries (FPI).
More than 300 products and services - including different types of signage - are produced by federal prisoners that total more than $800 million in sales to the federal government each year. Federal agencies are forced to buy these products and services from FPI even though the private sector has repeatedly proven they can better address the needs of federal agencies by providing higher quality products, cheaper and faster.
For years, sign manufacturers have been blocked from bidding on federal projects because current law requires agencies to buy products from the FPI, regardless of cost, quality, or timeliness. That’s why ISA supports efforts to open up the sales of these products to private sector competition, providing a shot in the arm to beleaguered U.S. manufacturers and giving taxpayers the best value for their hard-earned dollars.
Time is of the essence. The United States Senate may soon be voting on the National Defense Authorization Act of 2008, which contains a provision that promises to reform this Depression-era agency. This common sense legislation will help level the playing field and give small businesses, including many sign companies, the opportunity to compete and offer their products.
It is imperative that you contact your U.S. senators as soon as possible to tell them about your concerns. We’ve made it as easy as a click of your mouse. Click on the link below and fill out your name, address and e-mail if you want to send the letter electronically. Once you get to the letter, feel free to customize the text to let your senator know your company name and that you are a proud member of the on-premise sign industry.
